John E. Murdock III
John is a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP, a Southeast regional law firm of over 450 attorneys. John received his undergraduate degree and J.D. from Vanderbilt University. He has an active practice in the deployment and recovery of debt and private equity capital and in commercial law. Among other professional distinctions, John is listed in Chambers and in Best Lawyers for his banking and finance practices.
Since 1993, John has advocated the use of information technology and of process thinking in the practice of law. Those interests led him to the Owen Graduate School of Management’s course on process improvement in 2007. He has since collaborated with Professor Nancy Lea Hyer in the application of proven process improvement methods to the practice of law and other knowledge work.

Nancy Lea Hyer
Nancy is Associate Professor of Operations Management at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, where she teaches courses in process improvement and project management. Her research has appeared in Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, Journal of Operations Management and a number of other professional and scholarly journals. She is the co-author of two books, one of which was awarded the 2003 Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing Research. She has provided project management and process improvement consulting and training to a wide range of organizations in the health care, banking, electronics and aerospace industries. Nancy holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond and an MBA and Ph.D. from Indiana University. Prior to joining Vanderbilt, Nancy was Operations Research Manager at Hewlett Packard’s Network Measurements Division.
Since 2007, Nancy has been collaborating with John Murdock in the application of operations concepts to the practice of law and other knowledge work.
